Webcomics Worth Checking Out - Issue #1

So, Carl has his fancy music thing. I can't compete with that. But I do read a lot of webcomics. This, then, is my first foray into the expected weekly blog. Every week, expect upwards of three (3!) webcomic picks, with what I like about them, and a recent strip that I think is good.

Let us journey, then, into the INTARWUBS!!!11!

Girls With Slingshots by Danielle Corsetto

Updating on a Monday through Friday schedule, GWS is about "two girls, a bar, and a talking cactus." That's according to the banner on the site. Once you get into the meat of this comic, however, you realize that it's about a lot more. Love and relationships, lesbians, and virgin births are just some of the topics that were covered most recently. Yeah, there is a talking cactus. But he's funny. And these are girls you'd want to date. I want to anyway. Also, Miss Corsetto is kinda local...being from Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Here's a strip from last week...

Did you like that? Then click on it and read the archives. You won't regret it. I've read through the archives a few times, and it's like hanging out with your best friend who is also a girl that you aren't having sex with but want to and never do because you don't want to ruin the good thing you've got. That's not really so awesome. It's not like that at all. It's like...good...ness.

*note - girls do not come with slingshots*

Achewood by Chris Onstad

So, you go to the about section on Mr. Onstad's site, and find a description of a very powerful depressant that was used by slaves. Go ahead and skip on down to the cast pictures and notice that they are all stuffed animals and a shoe. Ok, now, start through the archives. Seriously. You won't find many comics that are more irreverent, hilarious, and at the same time touching as Achewood. I was a late adopter to this comic, and sped through the archives in a few days. Granted, it will take you longer because you aren't a speed reading genius like me, and there are many more comics now than there were when I started. But, as with GWS, you have to start at the beginning to understand the characters. You'll also need time to get acclimated to all of their speech patterns, since they are a little strange at first.

Here's the strip from June 21, 2004...

Atland by Nate Piekos

Does the name "Nate Piekos" mean anything to you? Take a second and Google it...You see that first result? Yeah, Mr. Piekos runs Blambot, home to the fonts that grace so many many things. He's also a professional comic book lettererer, which is something that I think is really cool. Just FYI, he designed all the fonts on that website. Any of them look familiar?

Anyway, he does a webcomic too, called Atland, and it starts you off thinking it's a typical fantasy comic. But then you're tipped over and things are rammed into places they shouldn't be, but it's ok because the art is really good and professional looking. What I'm getting at is that this comic is anything but typical and ordinary. Maybe it does get a little convoluted story-wise, but it doesn't matter because once you've traveled with these characters long enough all you care about is where they're going. Also, one of them has a huge rack...

Although on a Minotaur, I guess they're called horns, huh?

Again, go through the archives if you're interested and give Mr. Piekos a few minutes of your time. It won't kill you.
